Charles Hanson and OscarCharles Hanson

Charles believes an auction to be a place of theatre and entertainment, with high excitement, drama and tension – ‘the spark of bringing buyers and sellers together ignites a saleroom’.

Having begun his career at Christies in London, Charles established Hansons Auctioneers in 2005, seeing a significant rise in sales on moving to their Etwall Auction Centre in 2012. His charmingly enthusiastic manner

of auctioneering has also seen him preside over prestigious celebrity and fund raising auctions across the

UK – “Would happily recommend Charles services”, Childline Northwest Ball; “As always, he was absolutely brilliant”, Asthma UK Ball; “A huge thank you for handling the auction so brilliantly last night. You did such a great job, getting everyone enthused and motivated – really fantastic – and we were so thrilled with the result”, Pancreatic Cancer UK. In recent times he has been honoured to auction at the inaugural Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust ball, and for the Strictly Come Dancing Bargain Hunt auction for Children In Need at the Etwall Auction Centre, not to mention a star studded BBC Children in Need auction covered by ‘OK’ magazine, who noted “Charming auctioneer Charles Hanson took to the stage …” to oversee what was titled ‘the most exclusive event of the decade’.

“… may I say how much I enjoy your energy and skill … you treat every lot as the only lot in the sale and this is essential to the success of the event.” Martin Gallon, Auctioneer for Sothebys Australia

Alongside local enthusiasm for the auctions, Hansons have generated much interest from national and international buyers via internet and media coverage. With well attended auctions, together with the option of bidding live on the internet, Hansons are delighted to offer their services to a worldwide audience.

The Auction Centre is host to monthly Antiques and Collectables Auctions, quarterly Fine Art and Antique Auctions, and specialist sales of coins, textiles, toys, wine, books, Oriental works of art, armoury, stamps and Derbyshire art. Alongside Charles and the in house valuing team, Hansons employ a range of consultants across all sectors of the arts, including Chinese ceramics expert Lars Tharp and jewellery specialist Kate Bliss, both of whom are well known through their work on television, ensuring accurate valuation and industry wide interest.

Hansons have been privileged to see a wide range of exciting objects go ‘under the hammer’, including a rare and fine Chinese imperial vase selling for £192,000, the Dr Allison estate of antiques selling for in excess of £400,000, and more recently a 17th century estate, ‘caught in time’, which uncovered a host of oak period items – the latter receiving an unprecedented level of international media coverage prior to auction, resulting in many items selling for retail prices rather than auction prices. Generating both national and international interest, items on offer have been as diverse as Queen Victoria’s bloomers and early Australian convict letters – which resulted in a live radio interview ‘down under’. And from a teapot used at the time of the ‘Boston Tea Party’, through to a piece of toast from Prince Charles breakfast tray of the morning of his wedding to Princess Diana, Hansons never cease to be surprised by what can be found tucked away in the corners of people’s homes.

With his face known to many following his regular appearances on television, Charles is committed to using his profile to help raise funds on behalf of SANDS, a charity close to his family’s heart. He continues to film with the BBC shows The Antiques Road Trip and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, alongside the BBC’s ‘Bargain Hunt’ where he can be seen throughout the year as both expert and auctioneer – he has been appearing in the programme for over 10 years. And as the ‘Bargain Hunt’ team regularly film at Hansons Auction Rooms, clients frequently spot themselves on screen!
